Sightseeing

24 hours in Beijing
This 24-hour guide to Beijing allows you to see a side of the city that you might have not found before.

Morning

9am Take Bus 401,402,973,991 to Dashanzi Lukounan (大山子路口南). Start your day at Dashanzi Art District where art galleries, studios and eateries abound. You may find 3 hours not enough for taking in all you want here, as there is much to see and do.

Afternoon

12am From your morning explorations, you will have come across many choices for where to have your lunch. Restaurants, cafes, bistros and coffee bars can be found in abundance here. Spend a leisurely hour enjoying the atmosphere and rest up for your afternoon.

1pm Exit Dashanzi and head west to Jiuxianqiao Lu (酒仙橋路) and take Bus 402 at the stop called Dashanzi Lukounan (大山子路口南) on the east side of the road, get off at Caochangdi (草場地). Here you’ll find the East End Arts, located just five km north of the Dashanzi Art District. This is a relatively new artist community, with many of its resident artists formerly based in Dashanzi. Rising popularity, and therefore costs, caused many of the founding artists from Dashanzi to relocate, many of them to East End Arts. Its stated purpose is to provide more art studios and galleries, in a less commercial environment. Enjoy two hours making your way through the variety of workspaces.

3pm Take Subway Line 1 to Dawang Lu (大望路), leave through Exit B, then take Bus “930支1” at Bawangfen Dong (八王墳東) to Songzhuang (宋莊). Then you can take a private motorcycle taxi there (just a few RMB) to one of the sites in this village. Your first impression of this village may not be good—shabby unpaved roads, garbage everywhere and simple houses. But upon closer look, you’ll find some interesting artists who call themselves “villagers.” The original farmers, influenced by the artists who came to the area, call themselves “artists,” perhaps a strange mix, but it works. Offer to take their picture and they will happily “strike a pose.” Songzhuang Village is a “melting pot” of art and people. Take some time and walk around, enjoying the canal and natural scenery here, amidst the tranquility you may just come to understand why these artists wanted to quit their modern life and live here.

5pm End of the day.

Shut up and Drink (Huxley's)

16 Yandai Xiejie, Houhai area, Beijing 煙袋斜街16號

Opening times: 5pm till late.

Bars are not native to Chinese culture. Several Beijing taxi drivers have told me they find the western habit of drinking without eating incomprehensible. Chinese bars are usually thinly disguised restaurants or night clubs, often featuring a weedy singer-guitarist or an egomaniac DJ inflicting techno. What a relief to find a bar with the slogan "Shut up just drink!" The graffiti-covered walls give Huxley's a student feel. With friendly staff, cocktails that contain alcohol (the mojitos are a must), and beers at ten kuai, we definitely rate this place and so does the loyal, mixed crowd it attracts. Only gripe is that by 10 pm the bar had run out of cold beer due to the absurd custom of selling bottles in batches of twenty to show-offs who stack them on their table and wait for them to warm up. Regional Cuisine

Kong Yiji 孔乙己

Named after one of Lu Xun's tragic characters, a failed scholar who is bullied and ridiculed in his local inn, the Kong Yiji's specialities are zuixia (drunken shrimp), served alive in a bowl of wine, and dongporou, a fatty port dish as tasty as it is unhealthy. Wash it all down with yellow rice wine (huangjiu). An authentically Zhejiang style bamboo grove leads into the restaurant. This place does a brisk business so you may need to book.

World Cuisine

Santa Claus would not feel out of place in this outpost of the north. The lodge-like environment is decorated in the best-possible taste – reindeer antler light fixtures, for example, add to the authentic feel.

The ambiance is reflected in the food – game and fish are stalwarts. Don’t miss out on the imported reindeer steaks, if you want to know what Rudolf tasted like at the end of his career.

This large establishment offers Chinese and Thai-style massage and reflexology, as well as facials and other beauty treatments.

With a calming ambiance, prompt and friendly service, masseuses with a soothing touch and complimentary food and beverages, Bodhi Therapeutic Retreat was a no-brainer destination to take every visiting Beijing guest or relative for a treat. At discounted prices for the better part of last year, it was a regular indulgence we took for granted. But sadly the days of those cheap deals have passed and our shoulders are cranked up against our ears once more. Well, tbj brings good news: Long Island Massage & Spa, a 1,700 square meter basement oasis, has just joined the ranks of Bodhi and Taipan with features like Chinese and Thai style massage and reflexology as well as facials and other beauty treatments offered in 34 rooms. Long Island distinguishes itself from the pack by boasting six licensed medical masseuses on staff to press your hurt-so-good nerve meridians and a drink and food menu that emphasizes healthy Southern-style specialties (warning: the nutty Guangdong cold teas are addictive). And with tempting introductory deals on the offering, Long Island is literally a bargain basement.
