The video shows Fernandez and some Argentina teammates signing a song, which mocks from of the black players in the French national team after their success in the Copa America final against Colombia on Sunday.

The song prompted the French Football Federation to denounce the song as racist, while, Fernandez's Chelsea team-mate, Wesley Fofana declared the song to be "uninhibited racism".

Fernandez has since apologized, saying he was "truly sorry," and insisting he stands "against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations."

"That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character," he insisted.

Nevertheless, Chelsea have confirmed in a statement that it has "instigated an internal disciplinary procedure," adding "Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behavior completely unacceptable," as well as saying they "acknowledge and appreciate our player's public apology."

There is a possibility that FIFA will also open an investigation, which could lead to an important sanction for the 23-year-old.
