BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

REASONS BEHIND UPLIFT OF MOUNT QOMOLANGMA

Why is Mount Qomolangma much higher than the other high peaks? A new study presents evidence that river erosion is behind the recent uplift of the highest mountain on Earth.

A research team led by Wang Chengshan from the China University of Geosciences, Beijing, and others from University College London from Britain carried out the study, which was published Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience.

According to Wang, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the formation of Mount Qomolangma as well as the whole Himalayas, is mainly due to the collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate.

BLACK SOIL

Chinese scientists have developed tailored cultivation techniques and conservation measures for the black soil in the country's northeastern provinces to support food security and ecological safety, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The black soil is sometimes referred to as the "giant panda of cultivated land" due to its fertility and scarcity.

CAS, together with relevant authorities in the four provincial-level regions, launched the "Black Soil Granary" program in 2021 to undertake research that would provide sci-tech support to combat the degradation of the precious soil and boost modern agricultural development.

Seven technological demonstration zones have been established, covering a total area of 11,420 hectares. A total of 36 new soybean and corn varieties have been created and cultivated, and biotechnology to aid the rapid improvement of black soil fertility has been developed, according to CAS.

2024 WORLD INTERNET CONFERENCE

The 2024 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit, slated for November, will focus on artificial intelligence (AI), according to the organizers.

The summit will hold over 20 sub-forums on topics such as the Global Development Initiative, coordinated digital and green development, digital economy, and AI technological innovation and governance, among others.

The WIC will establish a special committee on AI during the summit, the organizers said. Enditem
